Patient advocacy

Recommended Posts

I have been offered an opportunity to work with a physician as a patient advocate.  This is not where you try to get them referrals at reduced rates but rather one where we would cater to the 1% that will pay for services by the hour.  MD rate is $400/hour, PA rate would be $250/ hour.  I would be paid as a contractor and 1099.  My pay is $125 for billable hours.  We would not become the PCP but rather to help the patient through the medical process and review medical records and medicine being taken.  Most of us in clinical medicine are "encouraged" to see as many patients as possible.   Is anyone doing this kind of medicine?

No, but I swear I had this same idea a few years ago.  Thought about starting a company to help patients with multiple problems and medications and help them navigate the system.  Also thought about setting up a system where you could contact  providers and case manage their patients for them and link all the providers together who see that same patient.

I did not pursue it for a number of reasons....live in a very small community and rural....patient population on the poorer side....huge geographical area to cover if I wanted to have a statewide service.....and felt like I would need a really good business and medical partner, plus a dynamic pharmacist......plus

NO MONEY!!!!!

The offer you have gotten might be an interesting side job?  $250 an hour but you collect $125 an hour?  Is that what you mean?

Paula,  This is a cross between advocacy and concierge.  A lot of money is not required to get this started but it is geared toward the 1% who will pay $400/ hour for the Doc or $250/ hour for my services.  We would not replace any PCP but as you said help them navigate the system.

Yes I agree that it may be hand holding but I am sure you know many patients that need it but unfortunately insurers will not cover it and few (can afford it 1%)  Those 15 minutes (or less) visits just don't address the issues and writng umpteen prescriptions isn't either.  For me this is an end of a long career part time opportunity.  I still practice Family Medicine 3 days a week. If I can help and get paid for it so be it.  I have never been to Hawaii but know it is nice.
