NFPA 1582 and annual physicals

Recommended Posts

I am an EMPA and looking to see if any of you Occ folks have good justification, advice, or resources for deviating from annual PEs for healthy 20 somethings. Sounds silly but I am developing a occ health/wellness program for my fire dept and am really stuck on annually examining healthy 20 y/o with no PMH or current complaints......

Your feedback and advice is appreciated. I will be contacting a PA a Phoenix fire for advice as well.

Thanks.

Many, if not most, 20something YO firefighters I know have some terrible health habits. They may not need a physical exam for their current ailments, but alcohol, tobacco, diet, and sexual health counseling can go a long way to keeping them fit for their future. Mind you, I don't think firefighters are particularly worse off than the average population, but given the stressors they will be exposed to, they really ought to focus on health early and aggressively, so they can put up with the stresses of a firefighting career without ending up way behind the curve as they age.

Unless it has changed in the last year... NFPA 1582 states that there needs to be an annual medical review like vitals and a questionairre about changes in status. The physical need only be done every 3 years (18-29 yo) 2 years (30-39yo) then every year after 40. To keep it easier to keep track of we just did every other year until age 40 then every year after that.
