supplemental app

This is a supplemental application essay for the distance education option.  I have already submitted my personal essay to CASPA.  I have to write about how/why I will be successful in the distance education program.  Why I want to be studying in the rural community.  Things of that nature.  Again, any help is appreciated!

My younger brother Andrew and I were at Grandma’s house.  Our mom worked night shift, so my grandma watched us until my dad could take over when he got done with work.  She only lived a short bike ride down the road.  I was in the house playing when I heard a loud bang.  My grandma came tearing in the back door holding my brother at her side.  His face was pitch black and I could see a large piece of skin bubbling from his cheek.  I was horrified at the sight; I couldn’t imagine what my Andrew was feeling.  Grandma ran cool water over a washcloth and placed it on his face.  My brother was just starting second grade, but he was a strong boy full of grit and adventure.  Andrew was poking around the burn barrel with a stick while Grandma was mowing the lawn.  An aerosol can had exploded in the fire and my brother got the heat of it, literally.  The next thing I knew, Grandma ripped out of the driveway towards town with Andrew in the passenger seat.

My family lived in the country.  Luckily there was a small hospital in town just 15 minutes away.  I feared for my brother and what he was going through.  My dad picked me up and met my mom at the hospital.  After the excitement settled down, I was able to see my brother.  Andrew looked like a mummy; his face was wrapped in gauze and all you could see were beady little eyes gleaming around the room.  My mother had already lost her first son, so she was frantic about my brother’s condition.  Thankfully, he was discharged just two days later, but continued with occasional visits to follow up with his wounds.  Our family was very fortunate to have a hospital so close to home that was capable of treating Andrew; it was convenient.

As a critical care paramedic I often transfer patients from the same hospital my brother was treated at for his burns.  It is the hospital that my dad has gone to for his chest pain, the one my sister works at as a radiologic technician, and the one in which my family gathered around my uncle to say good-bye, at too young of age.  Having the opportunity to study as a physician assistant in my hometown would remind me of the excellent care that my family has received throughout the years, and how important it is that I provide the same care and commitment to the families and individuals in my community.  I would have the ability to establish a close relationship and rapport with patients as a student that would transition into my practice as their healthcare provider.

I am confident in my ability to be successful in the distance education option.  I have built relationships with physicians and physician assistants who motivate and mentor me to ensure my continued success as a physician assistant student.  Additionally, I have proven my success with online education.  It is a comfortable learning style for me, and one I am excited to partake in.  One of my biggest supporters, my boyfriend, is the director of technology at a local school district.  He will ensure that I am prepared and have the technology required to achieve my goal.  I am certain that the distance education option, coupled with my mentorships and support, will give me the ability to provide quality care and commitment to the patients in my community, and prove a successful learning style for me as a physician assistant student.
