If it's 77 cents on the dollar for the same job, then you can't refer to men representing higher paying jobs. It should be an apples to apples comparison.

Anyone know the real data?

The 77 cents figure (which varies, depending on who you listen to) is average female income versus average male income. Really, one only needs to use common sense to dispel the idea that women make 77 cents per dollar for the same job, but I'm game.

A good well-cited discussion can be found here:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/christina-hoff-sommers/wage-gap_b_2073804.html

The article cites a Department of Labor study that found there is in fact a very small (4.8 to 7 cents) "unexplained" wage gap, but that it's not due to discrimination. Part of it is due to overly broad categories in the research. The study, for instance, lumped predominantly-male economics degree-holders and predominantly-female sociology degree-holders under the same category of "social-science majors". At other points it groups librarians and lawyers together in "other white collar".

If one were to correct for these variables there would still persist an even smaller wage gap, which can be explained by women tending to be less aggressive in salary negotiations, as has been pointed out earlier in this thread.
