Feedback from current students

Recommended Posts

The 16s start orientation Monday the 18th and classes the following Monday, so I can give you more of a personal insight in the next couple of weeks. However I've spoken to the 15s a lot and Barry appears to be a very tight-knit community. At my interview, we ate lunch with current students and they said that the professors have created a very supportive environment and they WANT you to succeed. And they'll do whatever it takes to get you there! My only reservation in attending Barry was the video conferencing set-up as well as the lack of cadaver lab facilities. In talking to the current students, they said neither has proven to be an issue.

@whitcc1 I am at the St. Pete campus. The bulk of instruction (around 50%) is done from the Miami Shores campus, 30% from St. Pete, and around 20% from St. Croix. I haven't experienced it firsthand yet so I can't say if it truly makes a difference having the professor physically present. The professors rotate throughout the campuses but there are some faculty members that stay put at their respective campus.

@hopefulfor2014 - The updated figure we were presented with today concerning the lectures is 55% Miami, 30% St Pete, 15% St Croix. After 2 days of orientation I can honestly say that Barry uses extremely advanced technology and the video conferencing does not appear to present any issues as far as retention/understanding is concerned. Sure, it's not the most traditional method, but they opened the additional campuses to cater to "home-bound" students or students that were unable to relocate due to family or other restrictions. Therefore, video conferencing makes sense for this reason. All of the campuses are inter-connected during class and the professor can take questions from any campus while simultaneously viewing the distance campuses on a monitor. The lectures are projected onto the screen so you can see the class materials as well as the other campuses and the professor all at once. As far as the lab is concerned, I'm under the impression that we use models but I'm not 100% positive since I have not yet been to lab. Like many others, I was concerned and uncertain about the challenges the video conferencing might present. But one of the lecturing professors actually told us today that the St. Pete campus has consistently reported slightly higher GPAs than the other campuses in recent years. So it doesn't seem to matter that most of the lectures come from Miami.

Hello,

Just saw your question about St Croix. I am a 16 (first year) student at St Croix and LOVE IT. We are a close knit community, and we do have professors here, but they are PA-Cs who teach PA Role, Physical diagnosis, etc. The bulk of the courses taught at Miami/St Pete are anatomy, physiology, microbiology, etc. These courses are taught by professors with doctorates in each of their respective subjects who teach multiple classes at St Pete College and main campus Barry, which is why it seems we may not have many courses taught at the STX campus.

Regarding IAV, it's kind of like high-tech Skype. Everything is in real time, so you can buzz in with your personal mic and ask the professor questions. Profs will also call on students from different campuses to answer a question. IAV allows us to have all our lectures recorded, which is an awesome way to study/rewatch lectures.

STX has many unique opportunities for community involvement, and we have some of the best clinicals as well since we don't have to compete with other schools in the area for preceptors. At most, each preceptor may have 2 students at a time. It's also a lot more hands on than in the States. I recommend looking at St Croix.

I'm coming next week for an interview at the STX campus, and input on what to expect?  I see there is an essay and group interview, can anyone talk to potential topics for either/both.  Also, I have a wife and 2 kids, could you give an impression on how family friendly the island is?  I'm certainly not planning on having a lot of free time while in school, so having the family be happy there is a big part of my decision.  Thanks.
