GetMeOuttaThisMess
Just noticed a new ED posting for the Dallas VA. Primarily fast track it states. Hours are six traditional 12 hour shifts, and one 8 hour shift per pay period (14 days), with latest coverage being till 11 pm. It does require 7 day/week coverage and holidays. Max salary you ask? $98,923. I'm getting that with a M-F, 8-4:30, holidays off, no-call schedule. You do get their bennies (not THAT special, IMO), however something is seriously wrong here at that pay scale. Other IM sub-specialty slots are also open it would appear and are on that same general scale.
Moderator EMEDPA Posted August 9, 2014 Moderator Share Posted August 9, 2014 do NPs get more for the same job?
GetMeOuttaThisMess
Not posted at USAJobs site yet. No mention of NP in description. PA only.
Moderator EMEDPA Posted August 9, 2014 Moderator Share Posted August 9, 2014 I thought VA benefits and retirement were considered really good. not surprising that the govt doesn't pay much for a PA slot when they post doc jobs at 140K. Lots of govt PA jobs pay around 80 k to start (state dept, peace corps, CIA, PHS, etc).
GetMeOuttaThisMess
Vacation is nice. They don't cover state licensure I found out last nice from a classmate that has worked there for many years. OOP costs for health, dental, vision much higher than wife's option through state. Life insurance mandatory and expensive (2/3 cost to employee).
cc56
I talked to an NP at an Illinois VA. I told her the same thing about pay that was posted, she said it was not that low. She was telling me a new grad was making over 100K in Primary care. I will be looking for the ED job though, do you have any info on it? I am assuming you don't want it! GetMeOuttaThisMess
Not I (as far as being interested). Look for VA PA slots in Dallas and you'll see it posted. You will not start at six figures (though close if experienced) with the VA in this neck of the woods. The facility is in a "gun and knife club" area of the city and apparently they do get some trauma there that is dropped off since it is a hospital and has an emergency department, though the victim is not a veteran. This is the second largest VA system in the country
G. Davenport
The VA, on average, pays the PA at GS12, step 10. The pay difference between one location and another is based on a location differential that is added to the 12-10 pay. Google what GS 12 step 10 for 2014 and if you got a few years under your belt, that's your base salary. Next, check the location variance and add them together to get your total "non negotiable" salary. You can get a sign on bonus at the discretion of the VAMC site director and that can be redone yearly (again, at their discretion). At least that was my experience. GetMeOuttaThisMess
No sign on bonus here (at least that was stressed as such). Again, no license or NCCPA reimbursement here though the time off is nice (they are open after Thanksgiving unlike most private settings. Life ins can be obtained elsewhere cheaper and health bennies were nothing exceptional. Retirement is ok as long as you do your part. Agree with the 12/10 salary basis. My director wants a month notice for days off and will ok up to six months out.
G. Davenport
I was asked to project all vacation 3 months in advance.
SocialMedicine
it might be pension ...... thats worth a lot of money in my opinion .... if you get a pension in 20 years from a federal position and then can work per diem at your leisure thats good money.
