Apocalypse Now

Recommended Posts

The apocalypse happens. United States order becomes disorder.  It’s survivalist mode now. Let's say its not an infectious disease epidemic, biological warfare, or nuclear war.  Perhaps massive solar flares wipe out communication, or there is a surprise military invasion, or there is simply massive social unrest that destroys essential infrastructure. Either way, you must survive in hiding without modern technology for an extended period of time. There is an abandoned urgent care clinic blocks away.  You have to break in, because you have a family to protect. With only limited time, and the risk of being caught by homeland security, which has become the national police force under martial law, you have to move quickly. You can take 10 items from the clinic. Here are your choices. Pick from each category and explain why.

1) Pick three antibiotics

2) Pick three other medications that can only be found in a clinic

3) Pick four other medical supplies that can only be found in a clinic

Um, you don't already have your own stockpile of these things?  Set aside $100/month for getting/keeping up to date your medical bug-out kit, and you can do wonders.

I do, but was playing along. also have small amt of nonperishable food, porta potty, manual tools, etc.

1) Pick three antibiotics

I would be most worried about soft tissue infections if I had to "fend for myself". Also if I am outdoors living in the north east US tick borne illness is a concern. If nobody is around how much risk do I have of acquiring a bacterial URI ? Still I would pick the following to match these three concerns linezolid (super aggressive I only get 3 right. Maybe I can sell it for 1000 bucks to someone at an apocalypse trade post), doxycycline, amox/clav.

2) Pick three other medications that can only be found in a clinic

an opioid for pain mgmt, prednisone or a topical steroid since i am outdoors maybe inc risk for contact dermatitis or plant based reaction, would lidocaine and injection equipment be part of a wound mgmt kit ??

3) Pick four other medical supplies that can only be found in a clinic

Like the hibaclens idea, would kit with suture materials x 2, iodine ???? you can use this to disinfect water right ?? I would have to look that up on my iphone before hand. That will still work in the apocalypse,  right ?   Maybe inject a few vaccinations if stored on site ... update tdap, pneumo....

Good thoughts esp. on the vaccinations.  I'd think you could still get a UTI, esp. if you're a woman - those typically come from self inoculation. CAP on the other hand or C-MRSA may be less likely if there was less human contact, but what if you and another group of humans sheltered together?  I would also be concerned about giardia from available water sources, but wouldn't want to grab Flagyl just for that (one reason I picked levo).  My concerns would be animal (and human?) bites, tick-bites, maybe some C-MRSA, weird PNE's, Giardia, various other skin/wound infections, allergic reactions (e.g. bee stings), pain from wounds (broken bones, gunshot), blood loss.  After thinking about supplies, many can be had from places other than a medical clinic such as drug stores and vet supply (and 1-day shipping from Amazon! Probably wouldn't work in this scenario), so I picked the ones that would be harder to find at places other than a clinic.

1) Doxy, augmentin, levo

2) Decadron, morphine, epi

3) Suture kit, IV kit/tubing, bag of NS, scalpels

AR 15, semi-auto shotgun, large game hunting rifle w/scope, minimum two pistols ( 357 magnum, 9 mm, 40s&w or 45), body armor, 250+ rounds for each gun (600 is better), maintenance kit, hunting knife, canned and dried food stockpile, water purification

Otherwise, your med kit won't be of much use and you won't survive past 30 days. We can team up. ;)

Guest Paula

I'm writing the script right now.  Who wants the lead part? It's gotta be the most handsomest of the men who have answered so please submit your reel.  If I was a man I would take the pretty nurse with me and she would end up the love interest.  (LOL).

I'd bring the Ebola vaccine/antidote.

  • 1 month later...

Pisser, my spouse is anaphylactic allergic to Tetracyclines, so no Doxy for me, otherwise I'd be all over it.

So, Cipro, Metronidazole and Mebendazole for me.

Steroid, Epi, Lidocaine w/ epi

Tons of Kerlix, Minor procedure kit, IV Start kits

The hard part for me is choosing supplies and interventions that would be sustainable in an austere environment. Of course I would like occlusive dressings, 14GA catheters, SOF-T Tourniquets, chest tubes and such, but in the end of the world, how sustainable are those? That's why my tx is going to be mostly limited to soft tissue wounds and fluid therapy. I can create field expedient splints and fluids, etc to expand my tx options, but your aesthetics are going out the window.

Ill choose 1 AK. To acquire all of my democratic neighbors belongings.

Ha ha.

Seriously, how can anyone with an interest in medicine really advocate anarchy--taking what you want by force from people not part of "your group", however you define that.  Regardless of how seriously anyone else takes the Hippocratic oath, as medical professionals we should be seeking to preserve and support civilization in the event of a partial or total collapse.  If medical people aren't going to do it--who else is?  Engineers, probably, but certainly not the lawyers, MBAs, or Poli Sci majors.

how can you preserve and support civilization if you cannot preserve and support yourself? it's questionable if democrats fall under the title "civilized"

The first rule of survival is indeed taking care of yourself... but taking what you need, by force, from others who have likewise prepared is not "survival", it is armed robbery--still a crime even in the absence of a functioning judiciary.  It's one thing to prepare including arms for self defense--it's another thing entirely to ONLY prepare with arms, intending to predate on others.

Wouldn't need any of that, just a black leather jacket, black leather pants, a sawed-off shotgun and awesome hair product

Plus a Harley.
