LOR help

Recommended Posts

So my third and final reference is flaking out after telling me he would and did fill out my letter. According to caspa he hasn't filled anything out and my prodding hasn't produced any results. He was backup #1 as my first choice for my final letter fell through.

My question is can I call caspa to remove him and replace him if he hasn't touched the form.

As far as my other options for a LOR, they're very limited. How would you guys feel about a neighbor I've known for years who was once a pa? He got sick with cancer and was out of work a long time so his license expired and he had trouble passing it since. We're not friends but we've talked quite a few times about myself becoming a PA and such and what he did as a PA. So maybe he can be a character reference? I really don't have much time to find another reference nor do I have any idea. I have my other two. A professor and supervisor.

Also how much longer should I give my current reference? I'd like to submit my app asap.

You can just delete him. There's a red circle with an X that you can click on.

I had to do that with one of my LOR. He's a professor, and despite the initial email, follow up email, and ample documents that I provided him (CV, personal statement, etc), I didn't hear a word from him. Not a peep or a confirmation saying "I'll be done shortly!" So I just deleted him and dropped him a quick email that said the following: "I appreciate your willingness to have written me a recommendation, but I've already received enough references. I'm really sorry for any inconvenience this might have caused you."

Anyways, I would say no to the neighbor. It'd be different if you shadowed him while he was working, but it seems that wasn't the case. What about a Volunteer Coordinator for an organization you work with, or a coach for a sport you play? What about a PA or MD that you've shadowed?

BTW, you can still submit your CASPA because you already have 2 of the 3 LOR completed. Check out the FAQ on e-submit.

I knew about that, but I was under the impression I could no longer edit the section to drop a reference if I needed to. Good to know I don't need to call CASPA though.

I honestly have no other options. I was the type to quietly work and not network so much. (How I regret that) My first choice would have been a PA I intended to shadow, but now that fell through and now I don't have time to shadow.

It seems my neighbor is the only good option who I know decently well. (He did live next to me for most of my life). Anyone else would be done as a favor, and might write me one after a short interview. But I dont like the idea of doing that, and I don't think it would be as strong. I'm feeling really anxious and quite disheartened that now two people I have known for a while now could so easily care less about my future.

Do you work on the ambulance now? What about a dr at a hospital you transport to often? Or if you're an EMT, technically on an ALS rig the paramedic is your supervisor... Or someone in charge of education or c/QI? Just other ideas to think about

I'm just a student right now and I've been out of EMS for a few years.

Have you been verified yet? If not and the reference messed up, they need to call CASPA. CASPA will only help the reference fix it, not an applicant since they can't do anything without the reference's OK and have no idea if there was really a mistake of if an applicant is trying to pull something on their reference.  If you've already been verified, the reference can't fix it at that point with CASPA - they should contact your schools directly and let them know they messed up. If it makes you feel better, references mess up all the time so this is not something schools are unfamiliar with. If we had a thread on here called "mistakes my references made" it would be huge.

Can I apply without LOR as I am international student. Are they grant my country's doctors reference?

Again, the answer to your question is No.

Your nationality is irrelevant.  You will need LORs that meet the requirements of whatever program or programs you choose to apply for admission.  Some require an LOR from a PA and/or an MD/DO or other specific individuals (e.g., a college/university professor or a supervisor).  If that is a requirement, yes, you will have to have LORs from individuals that qualify.  Whether or not a doctor or PA from another country will meet the requirement will be up to the program in question, and you will have to get a response from the program.  As there are more than 200 programs, I doubt anyone on this forum can answer on behalf of all of them!

As has already been stated, you must have 2 LORs completed before CASPA will accept your application for verification.  Most programs will not consider your application until you have the typical minimum of 3.
