Any failed medical students, failed nurisng students, or reentry PA students?

Recommended Posts

The first PA I ever met (thought she was a physical therapist) failed out of her first or second year of med school. She graduated from PA school in 2009. Now she's a faculty member of a PA program and a practicing ED PA at the university's hospital.

It can and has been done. Keep it moving.

I'm in this current situation as well. I completed the entire program but failed my finals. I've been in a weird limbo trying to figure out next steps. Every program I've inquired with about applying has told me the success rate for acceptance into a program after failing out of another is very low.

I understand that it's a risk, and that seats are limited but it can't  be true that if you screw up once there's no chance you could ever pursue a PA career again. So frustrating.

That's a really unfortunate spot to be in, but it's hard to blame a program for not taking a chance on someone in that situation. How would you ease their concern?

Sure it can be true. PA schools are rated on the quality of their students, not on their willingness to give second chances. So now you can either give up or realize you now have a significant hurdle. With the right PS, GPA, etc., and by applying to the right schools, you have a chance, but your past performance is an issue. For some reason this forum is chock full of people who don't think one, or even two, screw ups should affect their careers, but you have to realize that there are a lot more people applying without any screw ups as baggage on their resume. There are lots of good careers in and outside of medicine, besides PA, so it really isn't the end of the world. I really wish you every success in whatever path you decide to pursue.
