How to use CME money?

Recommended Posts

Please tell me what you all have used your CME money for. I'm in a predicament. 1000 dollars to spend, but not sure how to spend it.

CME Vacation does not appeal to me, I want to spend time with family if we go on vacation.

Books just sit on a shelf, I use Uptodate that is paid for through my PRN ER gig.

I have an iphone.

All ideas appreciated!

I was able t o use mine toward tuition for a master's completion program. Do you need to brush up on any area such as derm or ekg? You could take a Web based class. Do you need to start the new PI CME yet? You could purchase modules on them. Any apps you are needing?

Agree with previous remark. Is there some area that needs attention. If you need self assessment CME, you can go to ACP MKSAP board review. I don't think you have to purchase the entire set which is around $500 and gets you 173 CME credits. Instead, you could try one volume and get 20 to 30 CME self assessment credits. I cannot recommend as I haven't purchased them.

You could focus attention in an area of interest with Audio Digest.

Cleveland Clinic has some web based courses they sell CME.

Are you allowed to buy medical equipment with CME? A new stethoscope maybe.

Finally, I agree about the conferences. I would rather enjoy my vacation. Some practices give time off for CME as well as pay for it so you don't sacrifice vacation for CME. If you want the benefits of the conference without going, just buy the proceedings and CME. APPA is selling their most recent meeting with the CME. They have an upcoming Hospital Medicine Boot Camp and will sell the CME to those who don't want to attend.

So many choices, so little time.

There are basically two things you can do with CME:

1) Get better at something you already know

or

2) Learn something new.

As family medicine PA who has additional interests in missionary, rural, and emergency medicine.  I've used my CME money to do a ton of fun and educational stuff:

* Remote Medicine for the Advanced Provider http://www.remotemedical.com/RMI-Training/Remote-Medicine-for-the-Advanced-Provider-RMAP

* Paid for about half of my FAWM, http://www.wms.org/fawm/ including online pre-recorded CME from past conferences, to shore up areas that I didn't get at RMAP (or previously at WUMP, (https://www.nols.edu/portal/wmi/courses/wump/) which I did when I was still in PA school).

* Paid for Virtual SEMPA: http://virtual.sempa.org/common/tracks.aspx/1, which I'm still working through--about 1/3rd of the sessions watched, and very pleased with what is covered.

* Did FCCS Online: http://www.sccm.org/Fundamentals/FCCS/Pages/FCCS-Online.aspx

* And will be taking ALSO in the fall: http://www.aafp.org/about/initiatives/also.html

* I've done a bunch of keeping certs current, like PALS, ACLS, and the like.

I'm on a 6 year cycle, so I will probably be taking a recertification refresher in year 5.  I did OHSU's session in Portland right after graduation, which was excellent PANCE prep; since it's relatively inexpensive and not too far away.

Other things I'd like to learn to do include ultrasound or procedures courses, but those seem to be quite a bit more expensive, and they're not within my current scope of practice.  We'll see if I get around to spending future CME dollars there.

Go to a CME conference where the family joins after or before the conference. Then you can get lodging and travel paid for through CME funds and defray family vacation costs.

Conference DVDs or online streaming but you have to have the discipline to do them at home. If your books sit on the shelf, so wont these.

Any nearby medical centers that hold one day conferences? Easy travel and usually budget friendly.

I am assuming that you have the CME monies but not the time. Really need both to make CME a worthwhile endeavor.

Good luck

emrap for PAs is pretty cheap. 195/yr without cd copies or 260/yr with. 4.5 hrs of cme/month from the best lecturers on the em circuit.

I am actually going to sign up for emrap next year when I get cme money again.

currently emrap.tv is free short 2-10 min single subject lectures without cme(but still very worth listening too).

If you are in the new PI/SA CME cycle make sure the courses you take are approved by NCCPA/AAPA.

I don't have to worry about that until 2016 as my last 6 yr cycle ends 12/31/15. I already passed my panre (#3) this year in year 5 so 2015 is my last free year.

“It’s tough,” Dr. Feldman says. “There’s no doubt that once you’ve built that virtual infrastructure, it allows many more people access to CME than if they have to come together. But with that said, particularly at a meeting like HM13, there’s so much more to it than just the CME. The networking is a huge part of that.”
