GetMeOuttaThisMess
Ran across a posting locally for a PA (says physician assistant, not pathology assistant) in pathology at our local med school (affiliated with several hospitals on/near campus). This campus is not associated with the county medical examiners office so I'm not certain as to what they would be looking for the PA to do (their job postings are generic and rarely provide any insight as to what specifically the job duties are). Anyone have any insight/suggestions/guesses as to what this might entail? I applied for it just to see if I would be contacted since my well stated position of desiring a non-direct care position might fall into this catagory. At the slower than a turtle's pace the VA is moving at I'm still keeping eyes/ears open.
Guest Paula
They might really mean a pathology assistant? Human resources uninformed?
GetMeOuttaThisMess
Now Paula, you know that a major institution of higher learning's HR department would NEVER be uninformed. ;-). I would call, but oops, they never seem to post a way to contact themselves. Imagine that... Who knows, maybe the joke will be on me and it'll be posted correctly. db_pavnp
I would call, but oops, they never seem to post a way to contact themselves. Imagine that... HR is far too important to allow themselves to be contacted.
GetMeOuttaThisMess
Keep us informed!!!! It would certainly be an interesting interview. I could potentially re-tell all my stories from the late 70's-early 80's of ME runs while with a private ambulance service which folks never seem to get enough of. cinntsp
It's probably a typo. Having spent several years in the lab environment, I've never seen nor heard of a PA working in path. The PA curriculum doesn't cover the material needed to do the work a pathologist does. I'm not sure what other role we could fill.

I'm not sure what other role we could fill. the city of NY uses PAs(as in us) as asst. medical examiners. there was a big article in jaapa about it maybe 10 yrs ago. turns out PAs did a lot of the work after 9/11. in fact, they are hiring right now: https://www.health.ny.gov/prevention/public_health_works/careers/medical_investigator.htm this guy is a PA who has served as a county coroner for over 30 years: http://county.pueblo.org/government/county/department/coroner/coroner
GetMeOuttaThisMess
Yep, I remember reading about the NY folks. I thought from the get go that this probably was a mis-post by the school. As originally noted, the county medical examiner has his own office, now completely separate from the school campus (it used to be along the Parkland ED drive) so I would've expected it to be a county posting if it were with the ME's office. My county has it's own ME as well (two physicians, the primary has so much comp time/vacation time built up that they hired a second, part-time ME several years back to allow him to essentially work half of each month) and uses field agents without medical backgrounds (I know since I did the pre-employment exams on them and would discuss their backgrounds due to my long-standing interest).
