PA school rotations?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm in the final stages of submitting my CASPA application and the advice I seem to keep getting is to look at how good the school's rotation schedule is.  Easier said than done.  I look at the rotations, but how are you supposed to know if they're good or not?  Any advice on what I should be looking for? Or better yet, is there a list of schools with the best rotations?  Thank you in advance for any help..

There is only so much you can tell from a school's website, but I would start by looking at elective opportunities.  If you are interested in a field that doesn't have a required rotation, i.e. derm, you will have a better chance at that if the school offers electives.  You can also call the school and ask if they offer electives in a particular specialty you have an interest in.  The best source ultimately will be current students or recent alumni.  Checking the school's subforum on here may be helpful.

^^^^^ definitely this.  Also, it might be a little late, but if you have the opportunity to go to a program's info session, some of these questions may be answered, and some programs have current students or recent grads present at these info sessions.  Of course, those students may be the ones who had great rotations, whereas the students whose rotations were less-than or basically turned out to be shadow-fests won't bother associating with the program any further !

One question you might think about asking is:  what is the program's contingency plan if a rotation site is deemed to be inadequate once the student arrives ??
