Apply Early? When is it too late??

Recommended Posts

I will start the application process when CASPA opens this month, and I have lined up LORs. I need to finish personal statement, and do my PA shadowing in May, so I think I will be able to submit the application in late May or early June, even though I am not taking the GRE until Aug. I can add those scores when I get them.

What's too late? Is early June too late?

It is definitely program dependent.  If you want to apply to a program with rolling admissions, you may be at a disadvantage if you don't get your application in early.  I can otherwise only tell you that in my experience, I did not apply early (I applied end of August to most of my programs) and in fact made the deadline to my preferred program by just one day,  yet got in to that program.  The best advice is to know how your intended programs handle the application process, and submit accordingly, making sure you meet and ideally exceed all of their application requirements, and have an application that stands out (e.g., stellar PS & LORs).

I'll echo the fact that you need to be very familiar with your list of programs and their deadlines. If you're applying to some schools with rolling admissions, I would think that April-May is "early", June-July is "early-ish", and August-later is "risky business". Yes, there are those who get in despite applying 2 minutes prior to their program's deadline, but I wouldn't bank on that. Beware that some schools may not evaluate the rest of your application until they have your GRE scores (again, be very familiar with your programs and their requirements). So, you might consider knocking that out sooner if possible.

The number of applicants (and therefore other early applicants) continues to climb, so apply as early as you can with as much of your application in tact.

@Nucs2PA, I'm in a similar boat this cycle as you were when you applied it sounds. I'm curious how everything turned out if you don't mind me asking? All of my schools are rolling admission so I submitted my applications to CASPA on 5/26 and was verified on 5/29. However, I will not take the GRE until the end of June because I am still taking summer classes ect. I'm very worried that because of rolling admissions I'm at a disadvantage because of the timeline with my GRE. Would love to hear what your experience ended up being. Thank you for any insight. Kindest regards.

I applied to 4 programs that had October 1st deadlines - at maybe 6 pm on September 28th. I got interviews at three schools, but only attended one as my first interview (and first acceptance) was my first choice school. One of those interviews was at a school with rolling admissions.

I don't recommend it. But you have plenty of time!

Same thing with my husband. Didn't apply to all the schools until the October 1st deadline, plenty of them were rolling admissions. Had interviews Nov-Feb. 1 rejection right off the bat because class was filled, 1 never said anything at all, and 5 interviews. 4 waitlisted, 1 acceptance(top choice). One of the waitlist schools wanted to give my husband a seat 3 weeks before their classes started.

So I'm sure you will be fine.

LDQ, all went just fine.

I was accepted to the three school I interviewed at, including the one with rolling admin and Sept deadline!
