California: Chapman University

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone knows anything about Chapman University's PA program (other than what is posted on their website)? Thought I could start a thread because I haven't seen any so far. It looks like the program will be matriculating their first class in January 2015. Some interesting features to point out are that they don't seem to have any required HCE hours, but require 50 hours of documented PA shadowing. They also require a Medical Ethics class as a prereq which I feel is unusual.

Since they also have a bridge program that accepts undergrads directly from Chapman, I can't help but wonder if the program is aimed at younger students fresh out of undergrad (kind of like myself...) as well as Chapman students specifically.

I'm not from the area, so I wonder how the clinical sites will be...? Now that Marshall B. Ketchum is also getting going, there may be competition between the two schools for preceptors in the orange county area...??? Anyone know about their reputations?

Any information out there would be greatly appreciated! I'm pretty hesitant about applying to any new, provisionally accredited programs and if someone could tell me whether or not my worries are well-founded, that would be great. Thinking if I should even apply.

Hello,

I've actually followed the information on the website closely and called to inquiry. My questions were unfortunately not answered. They have also not returned my emails. The PA admissions counselor says the program is so new that she doesn't know that much information just yet. I do know that they were planning on accepting a winter and fall cohort for 2015 but decided to just accept a winter cohort of about 40 people. Because they have not yet accepted their upcoming cohort to begin January, I don't think there can be a reputation for Chapman as a PA program just yet.

Their prerequisites does seem to require much more than the other SoCal PA programs that I have been researching, such as a 28 on the MCAT. There are many provisionally accredited programs in SoCal (Western, Marshall, & now Chapman). I think they cannot be accredited until their 1st inaugural cohort graduates.

I also spoke with the admissions counselor. She said they have two more site visits left to become accredited but they are extremely hopeful. In other words they are still on track to start in Jan.

Hobson, Krystle <khobson@chapman.edu> Is the counselor they said she is the one to contact with questions. she got back to me within  a few hours actualy.

Their pre-reqs do seem a tad excessive to me as well but I guess they want to have the best first graduating class possible.

Just a FYI: there's about 9 PA programs in So Cal now, all of which have rotations in Orange County. Some are in the process of gaining accreditation. Also not mentioning out of state programs like Touro Nevada that also have Orange County rotations.

1. USC (Los Angeles)

2. West Coast University (Los Angeles)

3. Charles Drew (Glendale)

4. SCUHS (Whittier)

5. Marshall B Ketchum (Fullerton)

6. Chapman (Orange)

7. Western (Pomona)

8. RCC (Moreno Valley)

9. Loma Linda (Redlands)

This doesn't include SJVC near Fresno nor the 4 Nor Cal programs.

In case anyone is curious, CSU San Marcos was at the 2013 PA Accreditation Commission Conference to discuss the first ever San Diego County Physician Assistant Program.

Patti,

I believe CBU and CSUSM are in the process of starting PA programs-thus you may or may not be able to apply to them this cycle. I have not heard of the other schools and have no information about those. Lastly, West Coast is notoriously known as a nursing school with some EMT and Paramedic programs. I have not heard anything about them starting a PA program and have many contact with students in that school for nursing. Either way, on CASPA once you begin your application you will be able to see programs and in RED there are programs which you can apply to but have never matriculated students and thus are new.

Go speak with their LA campus (the one that's going to be the site of their PA program). They've also had job postings on indeed looking for a director and faculty. You can also see them listed on the ARC-PA website.

Yes, but they are not even provisionally accredited yet so their caveat is if accepted you have to be aware that they might not even get provisional accreditation, and then you'd have to have a backup.

Verbatim from their website:

In the event Chapman University is not awarded accreditation for its Physician Assistant Studies Program in September 2014, the inaugural class will not matriculate in January 2015. Therefore, candidates who accept a seat for the inaugural class are doing so with the understanding that the program will begin contingent on successfully being awarded the status of 'Accreditation-Provisional'.

Anyone have any updates to share? Do you al believe the program will gain proper accreditation? Being such a new program, are you all as hesistant as me as to the quality of the rotations and organization program and education? Being a guinea pig isn't the greatest feeling in the world especially with the price tag of this program. Please share any thoughts!

Also, regarding accreditation, if its not approved in Sept 2014, those accepted will be pushed back to the following cohort or will have to reapply?

I am in the process of applying for different PA programs and came across Chapman University as well.  I have contacted their Admissions office and they seem to have bery high standards for the program.  I was just wondering if anyone has heard if they are going to accept students who do not meet their requirements?  I have heard of some people getting into other PA programs without having their basic requirements.  I am shocked how much more they require for admission at Chapman.

I don't know if everyone has heard yet, but Chapman has decided to pull their accreditation application for spring 2015, and will be resubmitting it for the 2016-17 year.

As you know, we have been awaiting word on our pending accreditation status for the MMS in Physician Assistant Studies.  While waiting to be notified, we have had an opportunity to reevaluate our program application and have decided to withdraw our application for accreditation for spring 2015.  Instead we will be resubmitting our application for consideration for the 2016-2017 academic year.

Due to this new development, we will no longer be considering your application for January 2015.  We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this has caused for you.  We understand that the decision to apply to and pursue the profession is not a light one, and neither is starting a new program.

We'll be taking this opportunity to bolster our core competencies, develop partnerships in the community and relationships with clinics, focus on faculty recruitment, and establish our home in the new Rinker Health Science Campus.  We want to be sure that when we begin admitting students, our program is a comprehensive Physician Assistant Studies program that will not only focus on educating physician assistants in providing the best patient care, but that we also contribute to the community we live and work in by engaging the community and other health care professionals.

We appreciate your continued interest in Chapman University and hope to work with you again soon.

Hello to all who applied to Chapman this cycle and has been looking for the thread! I submitted my primary application on CASPA early June and received a call for interview this past week! So far the available interview dates are 8/17 and 8/27. Hopefully they can get their accreditation this September!

Did they also email you? What area code does the call come from if you don't mind me asking.

I do not think they email you for an interview. Their website states they call to talk to about you about having an interview. The area code is 714. I will be interviewing woo!!
