EM rotation in Chicago?

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, I am in my 1st year of PA school starting the 2nd in May and I was just wondering if there were any PAs out there that might have some connections in the chicagoland area as far as possibly setting up a rotation a year from now. I have worked as an ER tech in chicago for 3 years before PA school at a university hospital that almost exclusively had residents and attendings in their EM. Anyone possibly know have any input on where or who I could possibly get in contact with to make something like this happen? I know Chicago is pretty saturated with students due to the local PA schools but I would really like to get a foot in the door. Thanks

I found and set up a rotation at Cook County Hospital. That's about as "Chicago" as you can get!

You have to contact a woman named Estella Bravo to find out what dates are available. PA students are treated as 4th years medical students and have go through the same credentialing process. It involves a fair amount of legwork getting all of the required vaccines and paperwork, but I think it will be worth it. I go next month. I've had it scheduled for almost a year now... Here is the website that will provide you with more information. Let me know if you have any questions!

I had a hard time getting any chicago rotations. I do have a friend who was able to get one at Rush in surgery. I do think you will have a hard time as the hospitals with PA programs wont usually accept students from outside programs. (I had worked at Northwestern in EM for 3 years and their PA school wouldnt let me do a rotation). I ended up doing my EM rotation at Hopkins and am now working in EM at Mass Gen. My best advice is if you are interested in EM see if you can get a rotation at an academic medical center (and if you get electives do another one in a community ED). My experience was night and day different between the community ED and Hopkins. I had a job offer from a community ED and realized it wasnt for me- I did not want to work urgent care for the rest of my life and I am not cut out to see children.

The only contacts I have are at places that exclusively take students from certain schools.

That said, check out Mount Sinai. When I was there for internal medicine it seemed like there were thousands of PA students in the ED from all over every time I went down for a consult. The students from my school who did ED there seemed to get decent experience. Very high volume, acuity ranging from a stubbed toe to alcohol withdrawal to gunshot wounds.
