Prescriptive Law Changes

Recommended Posts

I know I have ranted about Ohio's horrible practice laws here.  However, this time I have positive news to report.  The PA Modernization Act that passed in Ohio in 2013 has some good things.  Most notably, PAs who have had prescriptive privileges in the VA, military, or another state can now obtain prescriptive privileges in a far more expedient manner.  Once the board receives documentation (the board provides a form) from the VA, military, or appropriate state, the board will grant full prescribing privileges.  No more pharmacy CME requirement, "ethics" class fee of $200 to OAPA, or provisional period.  This is great-I am so glad I waited it out and did not pay out all of that $$$ in pharmacology CME and for the ethics course.  Not sure if everyone is aware of this.  It finally brings Ohio in line with the rest of the country.  I think things will start to get better in the state--if the nurses do not continue to fight us.  I finally got my RX privileges in Ohio and it is a sweet victory.

I am not sure.  I will have to look into this.  I agree, Ohio is a *horrible* state to work in as a PA, especially since I have worked as both a locum tenens and permanent employee in states like NC, MI, MN.  It is just sad.  The only reason I am considering going back to Ohio is because my mother is getting up in age and may need me eventually. Otherwise, Ohio would never even be a consideration for me. No appreciation for PAs at all there.  Totally run by nurses and NPs, who are in bed with the antiquated Ohio Medical Board.
