Regular or Temporary license?

Recommended Posts

I am a recent graduate and have my PANCE exam scheduled in the next month, my question is what Florida license do I apply for? I was told to get all my paperwork into the state ASAP and then all I would have to do is have my passing PANCE scores sent to the state. So, if I apply for a temporary license prior to taking my PANCE exam, will I have to re-apply for a regular license and pay more fees once my passing scores make it into the state? I don't want to have to pay for a license twice. Should I wait until I pass the PANCE and then send in all my paperwork? Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks

I graduated in 2011 so my info is a little dated but here's how it worked for me... I filled out the paper work for the temporary license and it came about one week after I graduated. I took my PANCE exactly one week after graduation and passed. My permanent license came in the mail without me doing any further paperwork or paying any more fees. It was seamless.

I never practiced under my temporary license because my PA-C license came before my first day of work. The only advantage for me to do the paperwork for the temporary one was because I could gather all the documents I needed, and fill in all the paperwork three months before graduating when I wasn't busy trying to study for the PANCE. And of course, the seamless transition to a permanent license was a blessing.

In your case I suppose the only advantage to getting the temporary license is if you want to practice before everything can take place to get the permanent license in the mail. If you are taking time off anyway, there's no real advantage or disadvantage to getting a temporary license first.

From what I understand, if you don't get your temporary and then you fail your PANCE, the will no longer issue you a temporary.  However, If you get your temporary first, and then fail the PANCE, they won't take it away from you.  So the only advantage to getting it before taking the PANCE is in the case of you failing… but I'm sure you don't have to worry about that! :-)

I might not be remembering correctly but my understanding is that you will lose the temporary if you fail the PANCE but you can reapply for it. This may help: http://www.leg.state.fl.us/Statutes/index.cfm?App_mode=Display_Statute&Search_String=&URL=0400-0499/0458/Sections/0458.347.html

Particularly,

2. The department may grant temporary licensure to an applicant who meets the requirements of subparagraph 1. Between meetings of the council, the department may grant temporary licensure to practice based on the completion of all temporary licensure requirements. All such administratively issued licenses shall be reviewed and acted on at the next regular meeting of the council. A temporary license expires 30 days after receipt and notice of scores to the licenseholder from the first available examination specified in subparagraph 1. following licensure by the department. An applicant who fails the proficiency examination is no longer temporarily licensed, but may apply for a one-time extension of temporary licensure after reapplying for the next available examination. Extended licensure shall expire upon failure of the licenseholder to sit for the next available examination or upon receipt and notice of scores to the licenseholder from such examination.

Wow Woodsters!  That is not what the DOH told us when they visited our school.  They did not mention the "reapplying for an extension" part… they made it sound like it is continuous.

It can be for 1 year though…

"An applicant failing the proficiency examination is no longer temporarily licensed, but may reapply for a 1-year extension of temporary licensure. An applicant may not be granted more than two temporary licenses and may not be licensed as a physician assistant until he or she passes the examination administered by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants."

I will admit that I did not confirm the date of the source document I quoted above (although I found it on an internet search the same day I quoted it) and it has been two years since I graduated so I'm not "up" on these things. But it would appear that failing the PANCE will strip your temporary license. And even though your "extension" is "good" for a year, I imagine that if you fail the PANCE again in that year that you lose your extension. At any rate, here's hoping for first time pass for all of you!

Sooo my understanding is you can sign up for PANCE with in 90 days PRIOR to graduation. You can then apply for Temp License, and begin working AFTER graduation but BEFORE taking PANCE. Is this correct?

I might have made this part up, but I remember reading something about Medicare not reimbursing PAs with Temp License.... Anyone else?
