LoRezSkyline
So I should probably be studying up for the CAQ instead, but it's far more fun to salivate over the thoughts of bellying up to the bar with a good beer and Po' Boy in hand. With that said, and in the interest of Febrifuge's original post - here is my own working list thus far? Sharing with the group in the event it saves someone else the time, but don't go snagging the last reservation at Cochon ahead of me, OK??? :) I'll never make two-thirds of these, but I despise the feeling of a wasted meal when I'm traveling so I usually do my homework ahead of time! Your mileage/tastes may vary - I don't mind splurging for a few meals, but I usually favor local/cheap/good over high-end. Looking forward to it - hopefully we can arrange a get-together for meal/drinks while everyone's down there... medic25
Count me in for the forum get-together. Cochon and The Avenue Pub both look fantastic, but Lafitte's is on my must visit list. I've had the chance to enjoy a few of the world's oldest bars, and this is one I definitely want to add.
taotaox1
Hey, question for anyone who has been to Sempa before.. I am a 2nd year student graduating in August and an on an ED elective that will allow me the time to go to the conference. My main purpose (as I am in school and still getting plenty of "CME" so to speak) would be to network for finding an ED job, though I am sure the lectures will be enjoyable. Do you think it would be worth the 700$ I would drop to go for the networking?
medic25
The conference is a excellent opportunity for networking. You'll have the chance to meet EM PA's from all over the country, and there are generally representatives there from most of the major EM groups in the country. ajnelson
Maybe we can all get together Sunday evening and try to figure out when/where to meet up outside of the conference? And I agree! Lots of opportinities for networking and finding a job at this conference! If you can afford it, and EM is what you are thinking about doing, it's a great opportunity for you! taotaox1
If any students or budget conscious persons want to share the cost of a hotel room PM me. I have a room at the Springhill Suites Marriott about 0.7 miles from the conference hotel. Total split cost for sun night -wed morning would be 111 each. Gaijyn
I just got back form a bachelor party in NOLA. Went to a fair bit of the places mentioned. I have to say, one of the coolest bars/places had to be Lafitte's. There are no lights in there. Just a number of candles and a big (grand?) piano with a singer playing oldies (Doors, Stones, Billy Joel, Elton John, etc). I am not sure if the singer changes in a given week but it is a place that is definitely worth going to. It is not in the heart of Bourbon either so it has less of that nonsense. Also, if you like a cool place with nice drinks that has a jazz/funk band and is close to the hotel, The Saint is a nicer place. They have a pool table too. Right off canal. Look forward to seeing you all there.
LoRezSkyline
So - I was late to the discussion, but it seemed like early on we were leaning towards Redfish Grill for a meet-up? Is that still the case, does anyone want to pick a particular date/time if so?
Febrifuge
Nothing is set yet, but an informal meet-up on Sunday or Monday night should work well. We can figure out who's there, and maybe plan some stuff for later in the week. When is everyone arriving? My flight arrives around 4:40 in the afternoon on Sunday. Moderator True Anomaly Posted March 18, 2014 Moderator Share Posted March 18, 2014 I'll be there on Friday, but waiting until Monday for the official "get-together" might be good- Feb, if you're coming from Minnesota on Sunday afternoon, I'm sure you'll want to go into your hotel and crash Sunday evening. medic25
I'm getting in on Friday, but will likely be booked pretty solid Saturday and Sunday. Count me in for something a little later in the week (like Monday/Tuesday).
Moderator True Anomaly Posted March 18, 2014 Moderator Share Posted March 18, 2014 It looks like we're gonna have a good number of people who want to meet up from the forum. Just to see how possible it would be to accomodate a large group at Redfish Grill for a Monday, I tested the waters in making a reservation- no reservations are available on Monday night. If everyone is amenable to it, it might be better to meet up at a place that is more drinks-focused that also has food, so that we can just walk in and take over an area, similar to what our group did last year. I'm gonna look at the bar/gastropub type places tonight, but if anyone has any preferences, particularly from the list that was posted, make a suggestion! LoRezSkyline
Hey TA & all, There are likely a million more choices, but from that list I sourced earlier - The Jimani or Yo Mama's might be decent options for a casual bar & food that are both in the FQ and walkable from the conference hotel? The Jimani is literally right around the corner - it looks like a total dive bar, but I made note of it in the spirit of Febrifuge's original request as they have a bar app menu with most everything under $7. That might work if we're all coming and going casually; we could just order several things and it's less of a hassle when the check comes? Yo Mama's is a little farther but still walkable, supposedly has great/huge burgers? I have been to neither, so it doesn't really matter to me - am open to any other suggestions you or others might have as well! I also saw on their site that Red Fish takes a limited # of reservations daily - otherwise it's walk-up, which might be tough with an unknown # of us arriving at various times. I am planning on checking it at some point based off EMed's recommendation, though - sounds like the deal to be had there is the daily 11A-3P 2-course lunch/prix fixe menu below for around/under $20? http://www.redfishgrill.com/menu_display.html?id=
LoRezSkyline
Just looked at Redfish again - weird, as they told you no when you called and their site seems to discourage reservations, yet the Open Table link on their own website works like a charm?!? Can't quite figure that out. http://www.opentable.com/red-fish-grill-reservations-new-orleans?rid=3815&restref=3815 Still, main issue with that option is we'd have to have a set party at a set time and couldn't easily accomodate folks just showing up.
Moderator True Anomaly Posted March 18, 2014 Moderator Share Posted March 18, 2014 For the Redfish Grill, I didn't call- I tried using the OpenTable link off of Yelp- it was showing that "no reservations were available". I was doing 9-10 people since that's at least who would be going based off this thread alone. I just tried again through the link you posted above, and that particular version of the site said that the group was too large to do through OpenTable...and as I'm at work overnight right now, it's not the best time to call. In the end, I agree with you- I don't think it's the best place to have people just come and go as they please- a bar like you suggested would be better. I'm cool with dive bars.
