Class of 2013

Recommended Posts

Hey! I have also been accepted to Red Rocks! I was in the weds. interviews. I have also been accepted to OHSU in Portland though, and am having a really tough time deciding where to go. OHSU has kinda been my "dream" school, as I have lived in CO my whole life and am up for a new experience, but Red Rocks is very attractive due to cost, and the fact that my life (including my long term boyfriend) is currently in Colorado. BLAH. Any advice?

Congrats! Yeah, you definitely have to consider the cost. I always new I would go to Red Rocks but one of the bad things (well, the only bad thing) is that you do not start your Master's degree until the second year, therefore you are not considered a graduate student until then. This means that you are considered a freshmen ungrad student and do not have the graduate stafford loans available until the second year. So it makes it really hard to fund the first year. You basically have to find a private lender (like Wells Fargo) and apply for a credit based loan. Overall however, the cost at Red Rocks is considerably lower than most other programs.

I love Red Rocks PA and cannot believe I will be a student there! It has been a dream of mine for years now. I'm super excited! I don't know anything about OHSU but you should compare location, cost of living, cost of tution, convenience (where you family is and such), PANCE pass rates, class size, and which degree you will get (masters, bachelors or cert.). These days, I wouldn't get anything but a Master's. Hope that helps and good luck with your decisions!

I faced a similar dilemma when I went to grad school. I lived in CO at the rime, and had a long term boyfriend who couldn't move with me. I had always lived in CO my whole life and when I got the chance to go to grad school in Boston, it was one of the greatest things I ever did. It was more expensive, but school payments are relatively small and I think as a PA, the cost will be easy to reconcile once you start working. Being away from your boyfriend can be tough too. But, you'd be surprised how quickly 2 years goes! Just think what you were doing two years ago, it doesn't seem that long ago. And it makes the time you do get to spend together really special. Would your boyfriend be willing to move? It's definitely a tough decision, but also going to a "dream" school is important too. Good luck with your decision! I'm sure whatever you decide will be right for you. Maybe I will see you at Red Rocks this Fall! The most important thing is that you got accepted, and the rest of the decision will work out the way it is supposed to. Best of luck making your choice.

Saralynn, I HAVE to reply to you because I am facing a similar situation. I'm accepted to RR and UTSW, which I fell in LOVE with when I interviewed. I just want to give you my input and then am excited to hear what you decide. I've always thought I'd go to RR and then I discovered UTSW. My big concern and what you should think of is it you go to RR, will you always wonder what if I had gone to OHSU? That'd be my big worry. If the answer is yes, then I really think you should go to OHSU. Plenty of MDs that I work with strongly encourage going to schools in different locations because you get to see a different population and medicine is different. You could come back to Colo afterwards and bring something to your work that you may not have by staying here. Can you tell the way I'm leaning? :)

I wasn't super excited about the loan situation or the fact that the Masters was online, but those are both things that can be dealt with. What kept coming back in my head was Dr Nickell saying, "don't pick a school just because it's in Colo". I really agree with this. From an outsider, I think you should pick your dream school. I'm 95% sure that's what I'm going to do. Good Luck!!

Can any accepted students offer any advice for those applying for the class of 2014? I'm not a CO resident, but have always wanted to move there. I have a lot of shadowing experience in all different areas of medicine, as well as volunteer experience with a Women's shelter. I have also worked in a surgeons office for the past 7 years and have been around long enough there that now I get to assist with all medical procedures and have scrubbed in on many office surgeries. My GPA is the only thing that isn't stellar. I noticed RR doesn't state a minimum GPA. Can anyone give some advice or insight into how I may improve myself and what you guys did to get in. I also have a Bachelors in Biology. Thanks guys!

He considers me his medical assistant, but I am not a certified medical assistant. I scrub in on office surgeries with him now. My GPA is what I'm not sure about. There are classes that I have retaken for a better grade and if you calculate my GPA based on replaced grades, I have a 3.0. I don't know if that's how RR calculates it, or if they include every single class and every single attempt into the GPA then obviously my GPA wou,d be considerably lower. The surgeon I work for estimated my time with him at this point to be about 3500 hrs. But, I have also shadowed other PA's and other physicians as well.

Good thing is Colorado does not require that your be certified to be an MA to work as an MA. If he "considers" you the MA, then you're the MA. Bad thing is I think you have to have a cum and science gpa >3.0 on CASPA to even be considered. CASPA makes you submit ALL grades that are on your transcripts. I believe RR looks at your last 40 credits more in depth than your whole undergrad which is nice. As far as your replaced grades, are the original grades on your transcript? Or does your college use the "last grade stands" policy?

I wanted to ask the 2013 class how competitive I would be. I have 7 years experience as a Rad Tech including surgery, CT, specials, cath lab, & ER. My GPA is 3.38 overall & 3.4 science. I have over 13,000 direct contact hours. Any info you could give would be appreciated. I live in Texas but really want to go to RRCC because the student body is made up of HC providers. That and CO is beutiful.

Yes can anyone give me any information as far as min GPA? I would also like to know what the mean GPA is as well. I am working to improve mine it is currently a 3.0 :(. Also, I read on one of the above post that they only count the last 45 hours taken for GPA? This doesn't make sense to me but I read it on this forum.
