  6. Not all acceptances have gone out yet, they’re going through the applications slowly so acceptances are being sent out sporadically until end of April . Spoke to admissions

  18. Looking at the article closer you can see how the dishonest "managers" massage the numbers. While the Docs say patients are waiting 17 hours, management says it's a 23 minute door to doc time. And management says the patients per hour has gone from 2.3 to 1.9. What this REALLY means is they hired a new grad NP to be "triage" and see everyone at check-in, which dropped their vaunted "door to doc" time to 23 minutes. But then patients are sent back to the waiting room for another 16.5 hours. But hey...they are meeting the metrics! And the patients per hour has gone from 2.3 to 1.9 because the processes implemented by TeamHealth slows down the providers, and of course the hospital is probably critically short of nurses so slower room turnovers, closed wings, etc.

  20. Agree we Scott and RC2 above. Passing as well, but it is a terrible test. A lot of "fist actions" that are done in reality are not even options. I also had to look up a lot of weird meds that I have never heard of ( and I used to teach pharm to first year PA students). Awful test. I think the answer is to allow a CAQ in one's specialty to count for recert purposes.

  21. Just finished this quarter. Still passing but had a bad round. There are WAY too many "what would you do first" questions when 3 or 4 or 5 are all correct things and would likely be done all at once. Many have "what would you do" questions where the correct answer is highly subjective and 2 or 3 of them would all be fine choices and not wrong at all. One mentioned an intensivist. I do not have an intensivist. I have never met an intensivist. The only way to get to an intensivist is after an ER evaluation (generally). I have never worked in a hospital and spent most of my career in primary care in under served areas. The answer to the question is "send them to the ER." Not a choice. It is clear to me many of these questions are being written by people who work in large academic centers or work in specialty care and their idea of "common knowledge" is horribly distorted.

  22. I heard that people who were accepted on 3/26 had until 4/5 to place a deposit. So my guess is there is going to be another wave of acceptances coming soon

  24. And to make some of you feel more confident, I messed up in the interview. My mic cut out, my zoom kicked me out, everything you could think of happened. I still got the call last week! It’s possible

  25. Here’s what I think is happening, they are accepting the students who nailed in the interview first and then once they finished interviewing that’s when they start accepting more people, that’s how programs sometimes do it

  26. I'm at a job where we discussed me doing procedures in GI which I've done before at another GI job(Flex Sigs, Hemorrhoid Banding, manometry etc) and a year and half in I haven't done anything more than anoscopies in office. I don't get a bonus for procedures so I'm just enjoying the high pay and alternating 3 and 4 day work weeks. I plan vacations without using PTO and I have found that after almost 15 yrs into this career, that I really don't mind NOT doing anything!

  29. Hey guys, I just wanted to say don't let this experience break your spirits. Not sure if you have acceptances to other programs or will be re-applying for CUNY next year. I was rejected last year and accepted this year. Some things I did to change my position: - I reached out to the program and asked what I could do to make my application stronger for the next cycle and emphasized their program was my top choice - Obtained a couple certificates online related to Healthcare ex. Botanical medicine, Medical Spanish, Wilderness First Aid or can also try Sign Language. I opted for online certificates because I was working full time and didnt have the money to start a fall or summer semester. - Re-wrote my essay almost entirely and the answers to their application questions. This time around I liked my essay a lot better, it was stronger and showed more of me. I also posted it on thepalife.com where they give some free advice. Not too in depth, you would have to pay for that but either way there was like no critique said about my essay by them so I felt more confident about it and didn't utilize their paid service. Stayed with how I wrote it but I have seen their recommendations on others who've posted their essays so I know they will actually let you know if there is something major you should focus on. - Got another recommendation letter from another provider - By the time I reapplied, gathered more experience working - Re-applied early, by end of July. I hope everyone gets into a program that they love and if re-applying for CUNY, I wish you luck!!!

  30. Has anyone else noticed that meth seems to be getting stronger and it's harder to sedate meth patients? I had a ~50 kg female that 150 mg of ketamine, 15 mg of valium, and a precedex drip just barely kept still enough to CT her exquisitely tender belly. She wound up having a perf'd viscous and got a fixed wing out.

  31. So got called in 0 Dark OMFG for an overdose and a second person with a laceration that fell outside scope of practice of the RN. OD was relatively straight forward...I thought the lac would be - smoked some meth, fell down, hit face. Stair laceration to lip though vermillion border, had some contralateral jaw pain - so, I arranged to send them out. Going through the chart, find they're diabetic and have evolving nephropathy. Pt noted that they've been fainting a lot lately, not just when smoking their meth...to close the loop, ordered some labs prior to transfer...Na 112, K 2.3, Cl <65, BG 26.7 mmol (Canada here), so corrected Na~118. Cr went from baseline 178 to 775 and BUN 7.5=>22. pH was 7.60'ish. Dude's awake, talking, vitally (N) save mild tachycardia at 106...called the receiving ER back and we had a good little chuckle, and called the IM o/c to let them in on the joke as well, to get some advice on how to deal with this ...as did my doc that I handed over to at 0800. My call Kharma lately is getting to the point that the RN's are threatening to get a collection together to pay me my call stipend to not take call and let out a universal groan at report yesterday morning when they hear I was on . We were doing slow correction/hydration when I went back to bed for a few hours, and likely has been shipped out by now (well hoping anyway).

  35. I get referrals for ear pain with diagnosis of otitis media or eustachian tube dysfunction. After reviewing the chart, some were Telemedicine and no one examined the ear. Many of these patients were treated with antibiotics and a fair number of them have TMJ referred pain for which antibiotics were never indicated. I use telemedicine on a limited basis for selective follow up only.

  38. Current MHS student here. For people applying to the MHS program, make sure you have a 300 on the GRE. You can do the MHS program with less than a that, but in order to be accepted they want you to have 300. Unless you are a straight A student, you will likely not be accepted without it. If you go into the program with less than 300, you’ll have to take it during Christmas break (we had all of December off). Cramming it in one month is possible but going straight into studying for the GRE will be draining after a tough semester. Highly encourage taking it before July! Lmk if you have any questions.

  43. There’s 23 on the group me that was created for the class but we don’t know how many others are there that haven’t joined the group. They do keep seats open until the very last round of interviews. They don’t do any interviews just for the waitlist.

  45. Agree- A specialty CAQ significantly increases your desirability as a new hire. We don't hire anyone without the EM CAQ (or eligibility and intent to test) at this point.
