In a press release by Kate Marino the Communications Coordinator for Medical Society of Virginia:

At its Annual Meeting held October 27-30, 2011, the Medical Society of Virginia (MSV) House of
Delegates voted to offer affiliate membership in MSV to physician assistants. With membership
traditionally offered to physicians only, this decision reflects the important role that physician
assistants play in the team-based model of providing exceptional patient care.

“As physicians and physician assistants continue to work more closely, our leadership team has
become increasingly cognizant of the fact that a stronger alliance will have tremendous benefits
not only for both groups of professionals, but also for patients,” said Hugh M. Bryan III, M.D.,
MSV president.

Effective immediately, both physician assistants and physician assistant students are offered
special rates to join MSV at the affiliate member status and will have access to select member
benefits.

MSV is continually working toward making Virginia the best place to practice medicine and
receive care, and has formed a partnership with the Virginia Academy of Physician Assistants to
strengthen its ability to successfully reach these goals. Offering MSV affiliate membership to
physician assistants is designed to create opportunities for shared education, communication and
advocacy. The addition of physician assistants will prove beneficial in bringing additional
perspectives to issues that impact both parties, expanding education in key medical areas, and
ultimately improving the health and welfare of patients throughout the commonwealth.
