This is amplified by the fact that RN salaries in SF are way above anything that private practice is able to pay. The only way they can get new positions is to get PAs out. Not a good situation.

Actually she works at a Kaiser hospital in Oakland. But you are right, the nurses here make $50 per hour starting and I know some who pull in $70+/hr. These are ASN's getting instant 6 figures and I wouldn't really trust them with my care. They know nothing!!! The BSN's and MS-N's are at least somewhat adept. Nursing programs here have 5 year waiting lists and I know that most of those people are in it for the money. I know nurses who get squeamish at the site of blood!!! I remember one time calling in an order for a physician I was working for. It was a C&S on a patient in the hospital who was complaining of dysphagia and a sore throat. The Nurse told me "well I don't think it's strep..." I said maybe not but the Doc wants a C&S and besides staph can cause similar symptoms. She retorted with "Well I never heard of Staph throat.." The nursing schools here are turning out nurses like made-in-china toys. Nurses are the #1 source of overhead in hospitals and the demand is crazy. I just wish they would be more selective in their admissions process.
