There was some support for this view, and another PA dinosaur and someone I very much respect told me that he had concerns that the survey is misleading esp. regarding specialty PAs. I admit I know very little about specialty PAs since I've always been a primary care PA (and my argument is that EM is pretty darn close to primary care these days) so hopefully some of you specialty PAs will know what he means by this.

    Colleagues,

I would caution people to stop and think a moment about what surveys they are filling out. Who is sponsoring the survey? What is being done with the data? How is your information being used once the survey has been completed? These are serious questions in my mind and I will not fill out any survey which does not clearly outline the purpose of the survey, who is sponsoring it, how to contact the person who wrote the survey if I have any questions and will I receive any feedback for my efforts. Just and FYI.
The problem with identifying who the survey is sponsored by and what the info will be used for is that it can prejudice the answers. The entire point of doing the study is to get real subjective data about how PAs feel about different topics. That's why companies like surveymonkey exist. The link is to their site. No PA will give biased answers. That's the point. We are up to over 320 responses with only a few criticisms....not bad. Feel free to forward this to those PAs. Tell them to sign onto the forum and discuss the issues they have with me here on this thread.

Brian...I did just what you suggested, actually before I posted this response for ya. But you know what, it did get me just steamed enough to get me to join NAPA and pay the fellow fees...and hope my employer will reimburse me later (FWIW, the responder is coming from the academic side of the fence)

    Re: Physician Assistant Awareness Survey

I was the one who sent out the survey to about 900 people. I know who it was who complained. He was an academic PA. He even too the time to ask where I got his address, then called the AAPA and filed a complaint against me for getting his address from them. They send me a nastygram telling me I needed to tell him I didn't get his address from them. If you go to their site, they list PAs e-mail addresses, and all of the members have the choice of not listing their addresses. What is is these people are so afraid of with our organization. You would think we are doing something really underhanded and detrimental to the PA profession. These people need to get out more often.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has recently been discussing the role of PAs at Martin Luther King Jr.-Harbor Hospital. The following discussions that display a lack of understanding are from the June 12 meeting. Zev Yaroslavsky is the chairman of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and Antoinette Epps is the CEO of the hospital.
SUP. YAROSLAVSKY, CHAIRMAN: WHAT-- IS A PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT, ON THE FOOD CHAIN, AT A HIGHER PLACE THAN THE PARAMEDIC? OR BELOW A PARAMEDIC?
ANTOINETTE EPPS: I WOULD SAY AT A HIGHER PLACE THAN A PARAMEDIC. THEY HAVE MORE TRAINING THAN A PARAMEDIC HAS.
SUP. YAROSLAVSKY, CHAIRMAN: WHAT IS THE EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT FOR PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT? THEY NEED TO HAVE A BACHELOR'S OF SCIENCE DEGREE IN SOMETHING?
ANTOINETTE EPPS: GENERALLY, THEY HAVE A BACHELOR'S OF SCIENCE DEGREE AND THEN MANY OF THEM GO TO PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT SCHOOL, A TRAINING PROGRAM. IS THAT TWO YEARS OR FOUR YEARS? I DON'T REMEMBER.
SUP. YAROSLAVSKY, CHAIRMAN: CAN THEY GIVE SHOTS?
ANTOINETTE EPPS: THEY CAN DO CERTAIN TYPES OF TREATMENTS UNDER PROTOCOL THAT IS-- THEY RECEIVE SOMETHING THAT WE CALL PRACTICE PREROGATIVES THAT SAY THE KINDS OF THINGS THAT THEY CAN DO AND THEN WE CAN ESTABLISH PROTOCOLS THAT THEY USE THAT SAY THAT, IF A PATIENT COMES IN WITHIN THIS-- AND HAS THIS NARROW SET OF PRESENTING SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS, DO A OR DO B OR DO C. IF THE PATIENT HAS SOMETHING OUTSIDE OF THAT NARROW SET OF SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS, THEY HAVE TO CONSULT THE PHYSICIAN, EVEN IF THEY HAVE A PREROGATIVE OR PROTOCOL IN PLACE. THERE ARE ONLY CERTAIN THINGS THEY CAN DO.
