I can't seem to find any formal rankings of PA EM residency programs but I am hoping people have heard good things about some and bad about others and have some sort of informal ranking.

they are all good but some have different areas of focus. some(iowa, upstate ny) try to prepare you for rural/solo coverage. others focus more on community and trauma ctr type setting with double physician coverage.

EMEDPA, would you say that USC has a pretty good opportunity for residencies in ED/OR?

I wasn't aware that LAC+USC had an ER Residency anymore. Is that the program you are speaking of? Do they?

Yeah, I saw something about them having one at Arrowhead but I can't seem to find it now. They have OB and Surgery but not sure about the EM.

LA county/usc had their last em pa residency class graduate in 1995. it's a real shame. great residency. I have worked with several of their grads. likely the best em pa residency to exist to date.

The Bassett Hospital system is going through some MAJOR growing pains and seems to be stretched thin in all directions. I have no direct knowedge of how this is affecting the PA residency program, but I'm staying away from it.

Thank you for information. I am not graduated yet just want to know that what is the difference between residency and fellowship and how it make a difference to go through all this fellowship and residency program and directly joining the ER for job.

doing a residency or fellowship(the terms are often interchangeable for pa's) gives you thousands of hours of precepted training in your specialty, off service rotations doing things you would only do rarely in regular practice, and the opportunity to master skills not frequently utilized by new grad pa's like ultrasound, chest tubes, central lines, etc. I would encourage anyone graduating today who wants to do em to do a residency. I still think about it because I know there are holes in my training that a residency would fill.

12 or 18 months depending on the program.
these are paid positions with a full benefits package. granted the pay is resident pay.(45-60k/yr)

i'm in the process of applying for ER residency program in arrowhead, colton CA. i am trying to get some feedback on as to if this program is actually worth getting (taking the consideration of how effective is the training and how marketable can you be after you finish the program). thank you

be ready to explain your interest in emergency medicine and the type of setting you want to work in when done.
if it is a group interview let other applicants talk and don't dominate the conversation. they are looking for people they can get along with as well as folks who fit the mission of the program. good luck. you made a great decision to do a residency.

how competitive are the ED residencies?

I've asks this before, and to sum up the confusion, moderately seems to be the answer. Not nearly as competitive as PA school.

Hey EMEDPA,
I'm a Cornell PA student graduating in May 2013, super excited about EM. What do you know about the NYPH Cornell EM Residency? As an alternative, if I can get a position at a very busy city hospital, would it be worth taking the pay cut for the experience?
Thanks

I assume you mean this program at NY presby:
http://www.weillcornellempa.org/
should be a good program. I went to Haiti with some of their em md attendings in 2010.
a residency will give you much more experience than an entry level job. if I was a new grad today I would apply to multiple em residencies to be sure of getting a spot. the yr I graduated there was only 1 program...which I applied to...which lost funding and closed a few weeks before my graduation...

I know several folks who are USC/LA County EMPA residency alums and they are all very solid em pa's.
I really wish I had graduated from pa school one year earlier so I could have been in the last class.

Johns Hopkins EM Residency is an incredible 18 month experience. Some of the things learned through their residency would not be learned in just about any other setting (ie. ultrasound training, procedures/intubation), nor would you have the privilege of performing those skills. I would highly recommend it if you want to accelerate your learning, and vastly expand your skills and knowledge. You can IM/email me if you have questions...
